Yelang's Arrogance
The script is adapted from the Chinese classical fable "Yelang's Arrogance". In the original story, the King of Yelang who never been out of the country, believed he had the tallest mountains and the longest rivers. Only when the Han Empire invaded did he realize his kingdom was smaller than even a single county of Han.
Act One: The King of Yelang is dead. His daughter, near death, speaks with a patriotic general. She says: "You should leave, go out and see the world." The general replies: "Yelang is the world for me. We should fight for it.”
The princess responds: "That is how we were taught - to fight for the country, not for our friends, not for our family, and not ourselves.”
Act Two: The general goes to the Ministry of Finance to request funds. The office has four doors. The Interior Minister tells him to find someone else to approve the money. The general walks in circles through the room three times, only to realize it’s the same person and the same room—no one is willing to release the funds.
Act Three: Before the princess is killed by the Han prince, he reveals that the general is dead. An administrator says to the princess: "I am the true empior." She replies: "Then what makes you any different from the next Yelang?"
The stage uses a single set, transforming into three distinct spaces through the use of movable walls and openings.
